His mother, Marcia, played basketball at Brown University. James Mitchell is from Big Stone Gap, near the Kentucky border, where he was a standout athlete in three sports– football, basketball and track. “Nicholas would have stayed all night,” said his mom. Patterson topped off the excitement for Nicholas by spending a half hour or so passing footballs afterwards in the parking lot. The Toneys invited Mitchell to the February 1 rec league game at William Byrd Middle School between Nicholas’s team– the Vinton Cavs– and the North Roanoke Hurricanes. They exchanged numbers so that they could stay in touch.” After that, Nicholas and James would meet up after each game and do the tunnel walk. In a strange twist, because of injuries to the Gamecocks’ quarterbacks, Noland was pressed into action and will start Saturday against FCS Eastern Illinois. The Bison finished the spring season with two quarterbacks: Miller and Zeb Noland, who had another year of eligibility but chose to take a graduate coaching position at South Carolina. ![]() “And just being with the guys and getting to know the guys made fall camp a lot easier versus if I transferred in the summer.” “It’s a truly professional offense here,” he said. Still, it was enough time to grasp the NDSU playbook. Patterson spent the first few weeks with the primary Bison offense but once the season started was relegated to the scout team quarterback. NDSU operates under the West Coast offense, which is different then what Patterson ran at Virginia Tech. The time spent with the Bison in the spring semester helped him win the job this fall. The fact he did that was a sign that Tech saw him as a quarterback of the future. The transfer from Virginia Tech played in three games with the Hokies as a true freshman in 2018. For the first time, the former elite-status recruit out of Chicago who had so many colleges seeking his letter of intent signature, will enter the season opener as the No. Patterson said the news didn’t really hit him until he called his parents later to tell them that he won the job. “Me and Cam were in the same room so I looked at it from his perspective.”
